Artists' Periodicals and Artist's Files: Collection of Subspace Archive, De Pere, WI, USA

Collector's Directions For Use:

Initially, my archive developed unbeknownst to me! In the mid-80s I discovered the correspondence art network and a year later I started an artzine (Box of Water : 1985-89). As all correspondence artists learn very quickly -- you acquire a large amount of artwork from all the other artists in this exchange network. Additionally, I was being sent artwork as submissions for the magazine, as well as artists' periodicals & books for review. After a while, and as a way to create some kind of order to all this artwork, I opened a file for each artist as the work came in. Thus, the groundwork for the archive was laid, and I continue this practice to the present day. The Subspace moniker was a name that I adopted for the archive, as well as serving as a banner under which a variety of alternative exhibitions and activities have taken place.

The two lists to be found here are the "Artists' Periodicals" and "Artist's Files" lists. The artists' periodicals archive developed from the abovementioned Box of Water and considerably expanded when I chose artists' periodicals as my art historical area of research. The artists' files archive came about from my correspondence artist exchanges, and also includes files of artists I have never corresponded with, but either am interested in or have purchased works or printed matter by them.

Archives are wonderful living things that can easily take over your life, and like wine, or manure, get better & richer with age!
